Movie Night Cocoon Cardi

Whether you’re cozying up on the couch or hitting up the local theater, the Movie Night Cocoon Cardi is the perfect addition to your ensemble. Like the hug of a blanket, this shrug-style cardigan comfortably drapes over your shoulders for that extra bit of warmth. Work it in a lightweight cotton for summer nights or a chunkier wool for cooler temperatures - this same pattern can be used for multiple weights! Read on for the free pattern, or purchase a printable, ad-free version here. Grab the kit here from Lion Brand with everything you need to complete the project.

This project was the first in an ongoing collaboration I have going with Lion Brand Yarn. I chose to work with their 24/7 Cotton yarn, which has lovely drape so I knew it would work perfectly for this kind of cocoon shrug cardigan. It's an easy level crochet pattern and the techniques involved are double crochet, granny clusters, slip stitch, single crochet, and working in the round using the magic loop method.

Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton

Although the pattern is one size fits all, it can be adjusted if need be. It is worked up as one large granny square measuring 40"/102cm, but it can be easily enlarged by adding more rounds if desired, or it can be made smaller for mini sized cardis by working less rounds. The best thing about it is you can continue to pin the sides and try it on as you go so you can make it totally customized to the size you need.

Note: Any weight of yarn and size of hook can be used for this pattern. Results will vary in number of rows but pattern remains the same. 24/7 cotton is listed as a worsted weight yarn, but I find it to be lighter and more suitable to light worsted/dk weight.

PATTERN:

Use the magic loop method to create a center ring.

Round 1: Working into the center ring, ch 3 (counts as 1 dc here and throughout), 2 dc, ch 2, *3 dc, ch 2, rep from * twice more for a total of four 3-dc clusters and four ch-2 sp, sl st to top of ch 3, into each of the next 2 dc, and into the next ch-2 sp.

Round 2: Ch 3, (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) into ch-2 sp, ch 1, *(3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch-2 sp, ch 1, rep from * twice more, sl st to top of ch 3, into each of the next 2 dc, and into the next ch-2 sp.

Round 3: Ch 3, (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) into ch-2 sp, ch 1, *3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch-2 sp, ch 1, rep from * around, sl st to top of ch 3, into each of the next 2 dc, and into the next ch-2 sp.

Round 4: Ch 3, (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) into ch-2 sp, ch 1, *(3 dc, ch 1) into each of next ch-1 sp, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch-2 sp, ch 1, rep from * around, sl st to top of ch 3, into each of the next 2 dc, and into the next ch-2 sp.

Rep round 4 until each side of the granny square measures 40”/1.02m. Do not break yarn.

CONSTRUCTION:

Fold granny square in half with wrong sides facing out (right sides facing each other). With the fold at the top, measure 7”/18cm down from fold on each side and place markers. Starting at the corner where your working yarn is still attached, use a sl st edge stitch to seam the sides together from the bottom corner up to the marker. Join yarn at other bottom corner and repeat on that side. This will form the armholes between the markers and the fold.

Turn shrug right sides out so that seams are facing the inside/wrong side. Starting with one armhole, join yarn and work 8 spiral, unjoined rounds of sc evenly around armhole to form a cuff. Sl st to last st and break yarn. Repeat on other armhole.

Join yarn around outer edge and work 2 spiral, unjoined rounds of sc around entire outer edge, sl st to last st and break yarn.

Secure and weave in all ends.
