Catalina Wrap

I've got pretttttty good news for all you crocheters who have been lusting after my knit Cambria Wrap for years: I made a crochet version! Introducing the Catalina Wrap, a lacy, drapey, flowy triangle scarf that oozes with elegance. Whether you wear it with the point in front or draped across the shoulders, it will instantly dress up your outfit and add a touch of graceful sophistication. Scroll down for the free pattern, purchase the ad-free PDF here, or grab the kit from Lion Brand here (on sale 20% off for the first week!)

I was living in LA when I designed the knit Cambria Wrap, so the initial inspiration was something large but lightweight enough that it wouldn't be overwhelming in warmer climates. The next design choice was to create different sections of stitch repeats so the wrap would be exciting to keep working on and not get cumbersome with each row just getting longer and longer since I wanted to work it from the top down/center out. I carried both of these ideas over to the new Catalina Wrap and I think it perfectly encompasses what a crochet version of the Cambria Wrap would be.

I'm not usually someone who leans toward a super feminine, lacy look, so I was a little nervous this would be out of my wheelhouse and end up being something I would never wear myself, but I pushed through because I had received SO many requests for a crochet version of the Cambria. I will admit it wasn't until I saw the photos of this wrap that I realized how much I love it. The drama, the romance, the color .... LOVE! I'm so glad I took all of my customers' advice and brought this to life, haha.

While some designs can easily translate from knit to crochet, there are a lot of special aspects to each craft that more often than not don't just cross over easily to the other. The drapey, lightweight fabric of the knit Cambria and the multiple simple lace stitches were something I didn't think I'd be able to recreate in crochet. As my crochet skills have improved over the years though, I finally felt confident enough to give it a shot. I tried to keep mimic the stitch repeats as much as I could so the progression of lace parts would look similar, but I chose to keep the solid sections of this one a little smaller so it wouldn't stiffen up too much as crochet tends to do. The one addition that I made that wasn't part of the knit version? Bobbles! I just couldn't resist :)

The part of designing the Catalina Wrap that I thought would be the scariest (increases in lots of different stitch patterns) ended up actually being totally doable and simple to figure out. I recently bought this book called Crochet Every Way Stitch Dictionary by Dora Ohrenstein and it was so valuable for this project. It's a collection of all different types of crochet stitches and how to increase and decrease in them properly. I am taking a class with her at Vogue Knitting Live in January and I'm so excited to learn more! Now that I have all the math worked out for you, the actual stitches are super simple and there's absolutely nothing scary about tackling this pattern as long as you know basic crochet stitches. I even had my wonderful tech editor create some incredible crochet stitch charts for this pattern for those of you who prefer to follow those instead of the written instructions. Even if you like reading the instructions, the charts provide a visual representation of the stitches that I find really helpful.

This is an easy level crochet pattern and the techniques involved include single crochet, double crochet, front post double crochet, bobbles, chaining and skipping stitches, working into chain spaces, and the magic loop.

Break yarn. Block work. Secure and weave in all ends.

Tassels:

Cut one hundred eighty 12”/30.5cm lengths and six 18”/46cm lengths of yarn. Divide the 12”/ 30.5cm lengths into three groups of 60. Tie each bundle at the middle point with one of the 18”/46cm lengths. Fold each bundle in half so that the tie is at the tip of the loop created with the fold. Tie crosswise around each folded bundle about 1⁄2”/1.25cm below top of fold with remaining 18”/ 46cm lengths. Wrap the tails of the ties around and around the bundles and then thread them inside and down the middle of the bundles with a tapestry needle. Tie the tops of the tassels onto the 3 corners of the wrap and knot to secure. Thread the tails inside and down the middle of the tassels using a tapestry needle. Trim tassels to desired length.
