Long gone are the days of frumpy knit and crochet blankets! So many talented designers out there today have dreamed up endless modern and sophisticated DIY home decor items, and the Rockwell Blanket is the latest to join the mix. Using a traditional half log cabin technique, this design puts a fresh spin on an old classic. And I just have to say … this might be my favorite design from the whole Hue + Me collection!

I originally created this blanket over a year ago in worsted weight for a friend’s new baby. I came up with the basic concept and shape and she chose the colors and their orientation. Typically each block would be a different color with the usual log cabin technique, but this design takes it in a new direction! I love how the “negative space” of the Hue + Me Desert background adorned with pops of Spicy, Arrowwood, Bellini, Werewolf, Magic Hour, and Juniper instantly modernizes this design.

The mid-century modern feel of this throw is perfect for today’s home. It feels all at once warm and cozy and yet fresh, clean, and sleek. Best of all? It is TOTALLY beginner friendly. All you need to know is how to cast on, knit, bind off, and pick up stitches (way easier than it sounds!). It’s incredible that something of this scale with colorwork could be so simple to whip up!

Having watched all of the fall fashion runway shows, I can confirm that wearable blankets are officially a thing. Seriously. Whether models had a more tame “blanket scarf” wrapped around them or a full blown quilt or afghan, blankets draped over shoulders studded so many of the shows I lost count. So don’t be surprised if you see me on the street sporting this bad boy :)

You really can’t go wrong with any color combo in Hue + Me, so this could easily be worked up in any of them and look spectacular. It’s the perfect canvas to playfully show off your favorite shades or match them to school colors or any other inspo you can think of. Can’t decide on a combo? Check out this handy color theory guide to help you decide!

This is a beginner level knitting pattern and the techniques involved are the knit stitch and picking up stitches.

Notes: Blanket is worked using a modular half log cabin technique. Each block is worked by picking up stitches along the side edge of the existing work. When picking up stitches along the side of a previous block, insert needle between the first and second stitches of the row. When picking up stitches along the bound off edge of a previous block, insert the needle into the center “v” of the stitches just above the last garter ridge of the block. The number of stitches picked up along a bound off edge of a block will always be one less than the number of stitches in that block, as the final stitch was picked up along the side edge for the following block and is now part of the back “seam.”
