The other day I asked my Instagram audience if they were still into the whole granny square thing, and the answers were overwhelmingly YES! There is something so timeless about the granny square, and and they’re so satisfying to make, I totally get the appeal.

Personally I think they can be classy or kitschy, depending on the application, colors, and motif. But the classic simple granny square never goes out of style in my opinion. I designed this throw to represent that and serve as the ultimate meditative crochet project.

Work it solid, striped, or scrappy, this pattern is the perfect base to apply whatever colorstory you prefer. The repetitive rounds make this the perfect project to grab after a long day where you just want some calming stitches to end the day with. Once you get going there’s no need to think, so it’s a great “netflix and chill” style project.

Tassels:

Cut 160 10”/25.5cm lengths and eight 18”/46cm lengths of yarn. Divide the 10”/ 25.5cm lengths into four groups of 40. Tie each bundle at the middle point with one of the 18”/ 46cm lengths. Fold each bundle in half so that the tie is at the tip of the loop created with the fold. Tie crosswise around each folded bundle about 1”/2.5cm below top of fold with remaining 18”/ 46cm lengths. Wrap the tails of the ties around and around the bundles and then thread them inside and down the middle of the bundles with a tapestry needle. Tie the tops of the tassels onto the 4 corners of the blanket and knot to secure. Thread the tails inside and down the middle of the tassels using a tapestry needle. Trim tassels to desired length.
