Collector Wrap

Collector Wrap pattern by Two of Wands

We are still two weeks away from the official start of the Art History MAL, but it’s time to gather all of our supplies in preparation. Kits for both the Collector Wrap and Curator Wrap have been available since the announcement last week, and today both patterns are launching free here on the blog! If you aren’t able to purchase a kit and want to use substitute yarn or you’re interested in using yarn from your stash, you now have the yardage and gauge information to do so. It may also be helpful for beginners to check out the stitches and familiarize themselves with anything that looks a bit intimidating. Scroll down for the free Collector Wrap pattern, purchase a printer-friendly PDF of the pattern here, or purchase the kit with all the yarn you’ll need plus a PDF of the pattern here.

Looking for the knit version? Check out the Curator Wrap here.

Lastly, check back on October 19 when the first tutorials for the project will be added to this blog post. In the meantime, focus on choosing your art movement and color combo and gathering your supplies :) For the full MAL calendar with tutorial release dates, see below!

Collector Wrap pattern by Two of Wands

After hosting a themed make-along for both Color Theory (the Landscape and Vista Wrap KAL/CAL) and Hue + Me (the Genres MAL), I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to do one for my latest Lion Brand collab yarn, Cottino. The cotton/superwash merino blend makes for the perfect transitional weather yarn that can carry you through winter but still feels like enough for spring. It also has excellent stitch definition which makes it lovely for showcasing textures and colorwork. And with a palette of 24 colors, it’s a no brainer for a themed MAL like this!

Collector Wrap pattern by Two of Wands

The chosen theme for this make-along kind of came together simultaneously with the patterns. I really wanted to explore a variety of stitches and capitalize on the idea that a wrap is like a blank canvas. Through this concept, I came up with the idea to treat the project like an actual canvas, and have sections that each represented a different brushstroke that could leave behind its own unique textures and colorwork. I’ve used a top down, center out construction for the previous two MAL wraps, so I decided to keep the same shape for this one but go about the process a little differently. A modular log cabin seemed like the logical construction for this, since you can work distinct sections as you go along, with each one building on the previous work without the need to seam anything. The icing on the cake was realizing that these modular sections were reminiscent of “brushstrokes” moving back across a canvas, so that’s exactly how I decided to refer to them in the patterns. Leaning into the art concept, it only seemed appropriate to put together a robust set of color combos all based on art history movements, which each have distinct color stories and moods.

If you’re a fan of the log cabin construction, check out these other crochet patterns that utilize the technique:

Collector Wrap pattern by Two of Wands

Since I always like to include both a knit and a crochet option for my make-alongs, the first order of business was to gather a bunch of stitches that I knew could be “translated” into each craft. While they are of course not identical, I managed to come up with 11 stitches that very closely mimic each other in knit and crochet and are still in the “easy” category to keep this MAL accessible to as many folks as possible. Nearly every wrap I’ve ever designed has some sort of flourish at the end—typically tassels or fringe. But for these wraps I decided to keep them bare since there was already so much going on, and it’s really the brushstrokes that I wanted to shine.

The absolute most fun part of these MALs for me is creating the mood boards to go along with the color combos. I suppose I like to give myself a ton of extra work, because the research involved with that part of the project is extensive, particularly with this one. I was familiar with a few art movements and the artists famous for them, but when it came to putting together 20+ movements and color combos to match, I had to do some serious reading up about art history and source hundreds of paintings to find common color threads among them. Then it was all about working with the Cottino palette to bring them to life in yarn. I like to give lots of options so everyone feels like they can really connect with a color combo or mood board, whether they like a more cool or warm color combo, one more moody or more high contrast, or something neutral or full of color. For the Art History MAL, we have 22 official mood boards and 10 extra combos that I wanted to include but didn’t particularly suit a specific movement.

Collector Wrap pattern by Two of Wands

For my Collector Wrap, I opted for the Renaissance movement. I am a BIG fan of combining warm and cool colors in a combo, and while I usually opt for a more dusty/grey blue with a warm neutral, I switched it up a bit with this one that leans more teal and orange. It’s so gorgeous worked up and feels like the colors of fall splashed onto a wrap canvas.

This is an easy level crochet pattern, and the techniques involved are single crochet, double crochet, treble crochet, front and back post double crochet, single crochet decreases, chaining and skipping stitches, tapestry crochet, changing colors, surface crochet, mini puffs, working into the back and front loops only, and crocheting into the side edges of existing work. Once again, video tutorials will be added to this post throughout the course of the MAL so make sure to check back! If you run into trouble and need assistance, be sure to join the Crew of Wands Facebook page where those who use my patterns can share their projects, connect, and provide help to each other.

Notes: Wrap is worked from the top down in modular log cabin style sections, referred to as “brushstrokes.” Each brushstroke is worked flat in back and forth rows – turn at the end of each row. Every row increases by 1 st along the top edge of the wrap. Lightly steam block each brushstroke as you go along to even out the work and make it easier to work into on the following brushstroke. To change colors, work the final yarn over of the previous st/row with the new color.

Faux Latvian braid #1:

With RS facing and US 7 (4.5mm) hook, work a surface crochet sl st into row 3, alternating doubled strands of colors C and A in the following way:

To hold doubled strands of colors C and A, pull the center end out of each skein and hold it together with the outer end of the skein.

Starting along one side edge at row 3 just past the 1st st, insert hook into the space between the 1st and 2nd sts from the front of the fabric through to the back of the fabric and pull up a loop of doubled color C.

Insert hook in between the next 2 sts, again from the front of the fabric through to the back and pull up a loop of doubled color A, then draw that loop through the loop of color C.

Continue working into the space between each following stitch, alternating colors, to create a chain stitch on the front of the fabric, until you reach the final space.

Cut tails from both colors and pull up on the loop currently on the hook to draw the last color all the way through, then pull it through to the back side of the fabric. Tie off both colors at each end of the braid to secure.

Faux Latvian braid #2:

Work as for braid #1, replacing color A with color E and working into row 5.

Faux Latvian braid #3:

Work as for braid #1, replacing color A with color B and working into row 7.

FINISHING

Secure and weave in all ends.

Block/wash and dry the work in the same manner used to block and dry the swatch to ensure the finished dimensions match the gauge. I generally prefer to machine dry superwash merino as the fiber was developed for this type of care and it will stretch immensely when wet and be more cumbersome to lay flat to dry. Machine drying allows the fibers to bounce back and will give the fabric better stitch definition and squish. At the very least, I recommend machine drying for 10 or so minutes on the lowest tumble dry setting before laying flat to fully dry if machine drying for the full cycle is intimidating.
