Curator Wrap

Curator Wrap pattern by Two of Wands

What better way to kick off the month of October than with a make-along?! In case you missed it, kits for both the Collector Wrap and Curator Wrap as part of the Art History MAL are available to shop, and today both patterns are launching free here on the blog! If you aren’t able to purchase a kit and want to use substitute yarn or you’re interested in using yarn from your stash, you now have the yardage and gauge information to do so. It may also be helpful for beginners to check out the stitches and familiarize themselves with anything that looks a bit intimidating. Scroll down for the free Curator Wrap pattern, purchase a printer-friendly PDF of the pattern here, or purchase the kit with all the yarn you’ll need plus a PDF of the pattern here.

Looking for the crochet version? Check out the Collector Wrap here.

Lastly, check back on October 19 when the first tutorials for the project will be added to this blog post. In the meantime, focus on choosing your art movement and color combo and gathering your supplies :) For the full MAL calendar with tutorial release dates, see below!

Curator Wrap pattern by Two of Wands

As soon as we launched Cottino yarn earlier this year, I was already dreaming up my next themed make-along. I absolutely loved putting together the Landscape and Vista Wrap KAL/CAL with Color Theory and the Genres MAL with Hue + Me, and I couldn’t wait to do it again with a fresh palette and lighter weight yarn. The cotton/superwash merino blend of Cottino makes it a truly year-round yarn for garments and accessories you can wear throughout the seasons. With a palette of 24 colors and gorgeous stitch definition, it’s a perfect choice for a themed MAL like this!

Curator Wrap pattern by Two of Wands

If you’ve been following me for a while you know that I often refer to a wrap as a blank canvas. The concept for this MAL came together when I really starting leaning into that idea and wanted to put it in action. I thought about different ways to visually represent what it would look like to “paint” on a wrap, and these sweeping back and forth brushstrokes immediately came to mind. This modular log cabin technique is the perfect way to convey that, and I love that each “brushstroke” (what I’ll be referring to the modular sections as in the project) can be a different stitch pattern and vibe that somehow perfectly ties into the overall art theme. It feels like such a lovely blend of different styles and techniques, almost like it is encompassing a history of sorts. Hence the Art History MAL idea! The best thing about this construction is that while each brushstroke has a distinct section, there’s absolutely zero seaming! Each new piece is picked up and knit from the two of above it, making it such fun and less overwhelming project to finish (anyone else guilty of making all of the pieces for something just to let it sit and not get seamed for ages?)

If you’re a fan of the log cabin construction, check out these other knitting patterns that utilize the technique:

While the general shape of the Curator Wrap is the same as the other two triangle wraps that have been part of my themed make-alongs, the log cabin construction makes it a little different than my usual top down, center out go-to method. I also decided to keep the corners bare instead of adding any fringe or tassels. It felt more appropriate given the lightweight nature of the fabric and the fact that there’s already so much going on in the wrap, I didn’t think it needed any additional flare.

Curator Wrap pattern by Two of Wands

After I had the general concept for the wraps down, I couldn’t wait to dive into the color combos which is my ultimate favorite thing to work on when it comes to a themed MAL. I live for a mood board, so any sort of theme where I get to put one together really gets me going. I usually have to stop myself and reign it it so I don’t go way over the top and make even more! This time around we have 22 official mood boards and 10 extra combos that I wanted to include but didn’t particularly suit a specific movement. I had to seriously brush up on my art history in order to make these mood boards and source paintings that all had a similar color vibe, and then I had to match 5 colors in the Cottino palette that would go along with it. It helped so much that this palette has such a beautiful array of pastels, brights, neutrals, and mid-tones.

Curator Wrap pattern by Two of Wands

I chose the Renaissance movement for my Curator Wrap. One of my favorite ways to put together a color combo is to choose a set of neutral and then add a single pop of color. The Sedona color in this combo could easily be swapped out for nearly any other color in the palette and it would still be gorgeous. But I love how it looks here with the mix of warm and cool neutrals.

This is an easy level knitting pattern, and the techniques involved are knitting, purling, KFB, KPK, and YO increases, working into the row below, K2tog and K3tog decreases, working into the back loop, slipping stitches, changing colors, and picking up and knitting from a bind off edge and side edge. Once again, video tutorials will be added to this post throughout the course of the MAL so make sure to check back! If you run into trouble and need assistance, be sure to join the Crew of Wands Facebook page where those who use my patterns can share their projects, connect, and provide help to each other.

Curator Wrap pattern by Two of Wands

Notes: Wrap is worked from the top down in modular log cabin style sections, referred to as “brushstrokes.” Lightly steam block each brushstroke as you go along to even out the work and make it easier to pick up the stitches for the following brushstroke. All stitches are slipped purlwise. When picking up stitches along a horizontal bind off edge, work into the “v” of the st just under the bind off edge so that the bind off becomes part of the seam. When picking up stitches along a vertical row edge, work in between the rightmost 2 stitches so that the rightmost st becomes part of the seam.

FINISHING

Secure and weave in all ends.

Block/wash and dry the work in the same manner used to block and dry the swatch to ensure the finished dimensions match the gauge. I generally prefer to machine dry superwash merino as the fiber was developed for this type of care and it will stretch immensely when wet and be more cumbersome to lay flat to dry. Machine drying allows the fibers to bounce back and will give the fabric better stitch definition and squish. At the very least, I recommend machine drying for 10 or so minutes on the lowest tumble dry setting before laying flat to fully dry if machine drying for the full cycle is intimidating.
