Two of Wands

Pinewood Raglan Turtleneck

CollaborationsAlexandra Tavel8 Comments

Let's be honest - I design for myself. Every time I conceive a new idea it's because I have a vision of a garment or accessory that I want to wear. Sometimes the end product turns out exactly as I'd pictured and I end up wearing it ALL. THE. TIME. and occasionally I just can't seem to get it exactly right and the finished piece just takes up real estate in my closet. Well, I'm extremely pleased to say that this new design is 100% the former and I will be (*have been*) actually living in it. It may even be my most favorite sweater design to date!

Behold the Pinewood Raglan Turtleneck, my newest collab with Lion Brand Yarn using their Turnstyles yarn. Scroll down for the free pattern, click here to purchase the ad-free printable PDF, or (and I highly recommend this option) grab the kit for this sucker, which is 20% off for the week!

Let's start with the structure of the Pinewood Raglan Turtleneck. Knit top down and in the round, the only part you will have to seam are the two little spots at the underarm where you cast on some extra stitches when you separate the work into the body and sleeves - that's it! This is a little different than my Autumn League Pullover pattern, which is also a raglan but is knit both in the round and flat to create more structure along the sides. This pattern is quick and easy and the relaxed, lightweight fit will have you reaching for this beauty over and over again. The sleeves have zero shaping, which results in a slightly oversized arm that will cinch together a bit at the cuff but not into a full-blown bishop sleeve. I am so excited to have worked out the base of this sweater in multiple sizes so I can try it with different yarns and see how it works up with a variety of fibers and weights.

Now let's talk the real showstopper here, which is definitely the yarn! Let the magic of Turnstyles yarn unfold as the striped self-changing colors play back and forth to create a kaleidoscope of patterns and will never create the same sweater twice. I blew through this design so fast and was so eager to see the next color change that I honestly did not take even ONE work-in-progress shot. I literally could not put it down! It is the epitome of a "one more row, one more row, one more row" project. The way these two yarns stripe is just incredible. The colorways I chose have some common colors within them so they blended together so perfectly you can almost not even tell there are two different yarns used. I even got enough yarn to make a second one in case I wear this one out (and also since it will be slightly different due to the yarns interacting in different ways depending on how the skeins are blended).

If you follow me on social media you may have seen a sneak peek of the Pinewood Raglan Turtleneck in a recent little video I shot that documents a bit of my life in the city. You can check out a couple versions on my Instagram feed here and on my Youtube channel here. I've had it complete since early November but the yarn is so popular that it was out of stock until now so we had to hold on the release. So if you're interested in making this for yourself, I highly recommend grabbing the kit before the yarn gets backordered again!

I'm so excited to see some finished projects using this pattern since no two will be alike. If you work one up be sure to tag me (@twoofwands on insta and facebook) so I can check it out!

This is an easy level knitting pattern and the techniques involved are the knit stitch, purl stitch, m1r and m1l increases, k2tog decrease, working in the round, and seaming.
