This pattern was the very first thing I designed with Cottino and it’s extra special to me for a couple of reasons. First off, it’s a DK weight version of the chunky weight Rockwell Blanket that I launched back in 2020 with the release of Hue + Me yarn. To be riffing on one of my OG yarn collection patterns in now my third collab yarn with Lion Brand feels so surreal. Secondly, that chunky weight version? It was actually a riff on a worsted weight baby blanket I had designed and knit for a friend’s baby but never got around to writing up the pattern. The baby’s middle name is Rockwell, and releasing this baby blanket size now feels very full circle.

If you’ve never knit a log cabin or half log cabin project, you are in for a treat. This modular construction is SO fun to watch come to life. I think what makes this one so special is that instead of changing colors with every block the way you see in a traditional log cabin technique, I opted to only add a color every 3 blocks, which gives it a more punchy, modern feel.

The color combo for the Rockwell Baby Blanket (as well as the original chunky weight version and the baby blanket that inspired it) is a play on the classic Hudson Bay throw with bold primary colored stripes. I’ve seen so many knitting patterns that look exactly like that throw, and I wanted to take that concept but make it my own. The result is a blanket that looks equally as chic draped over a living room couch or primary bed as it does over the side of a crib.

Notes: Blanket is worked using a modular half log cabin technique. Each block is worked by picking up stitches along the side edge of the existing work. When picking up stitches along the side edge of a previous block, insert needle into the center “v” of the first stitch along the edge at the garter ridge, making sure to go under two loops so it is secure. When picking up stitches along the bound off edge of a previous block, insert the needle into the center “v” of the stitches just above the last garter ridge of the block. The number of stitches picked up along a bound off edge of a block will always be one less than the number of stitches in that block, as the final stitch was picked up along the side edge for the following block and is now part of the back “seam.”

FINISHING

Secure and weave in all ends.

Block/wash and dry the work in the same manner used to block and dry the swatch to ensure the finished dimensions match the gauge. I generally prefer to machine dry superwash merino as the fiber was developed for this type of care and it will stretch immensely when wet and be more cumbersome to lay flat to dry. Machine drying allows the fibers to bounce back and will give the fabric better stitch definition and squish. At the very least, I recommend machine drying for 10 or so minutes on the lowest tumble dry setting before laying flat to fully dry if machine drying for the full cycle is intimidating.
