Is there anything trendier than a tiny scarf these days? I’ve been rocking the Madwell-vibes bandana for a decade now and I personally think this “trend” never goes out of style. Whether it’s a long a lean micro scarf like the Amelia Neck Scarf or a simple triangle like the Outpost Set Kerchief, you can’t go wrong.
The Outpost Kerchief was the catalyst for this whole set. I didn’t want to just offer a measly little triangle that takes an hour to crochet as a whole pattern, so I opted to add two additional sizes to give it more bang for its buck. And honestly? The sizing is so easy to customize you can easily add or remove rows to make it any scale you prefer!
While the Scarf and Wrap sizes are big enough to wrap the ends around and tuck underneath when you’re wearing it with the point in front, I wanted to keep the Kerchief super small so I needed another solution to be able to wear it like a bandana. The fix? A snap! It’s so easy to take on and off and doesn’t have the bulk or fiddly nature of a button at the back of the neck. When I tell you River and I literally fight over who gets to wear this everyday … it’s an ongoing battle, lol. Because of that I can also truly attest to the durability of Cottino because I’ve had to machine wash and dry it at least a dozen times after River has spilled endless foods on it when it’s his turn to wear it. It makes me SO happy that he cherishes something I made so much, and it' gives me peace of mind knowing that something I spend time to make by hand can just be tossed in the machine to wash and it comes out looking gorgeous every time!
This is a beginner level crochet pattern and the techniques involved are single crochet, chaining and skipping stitches, and working into chain spaces.

BODY
Begin with a magic loop.
Row 1: Ch 1, sc 1, ch 1, sc 1, ch 2, sc 1, ch 1, sc 1 into loop. (4 sc + 2 ch-1 sp + 1 ch-2 sp)
Row 2: Ch 1, sc 1 in 1st st, ch 1, sc 1 in 1st ch-1 sp, ch 1, (sc 1, ch 2, sc 1) in center ch-2 sp, ch 1, sc 1 in last ch-1 sp, ch 1, sc 1 in last st. (6 sc + 4 ch-1 sp + 1 ch-2 sp)
Row 3: Ch 1, sc 1 in 1st st, ch 1, *sc 1 in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, rep from * to center ch-2 sp, (sc 1, ch 2, sc 1) in center ch-2 sp, **ch 1, sc 1 in next ch-1 sp, rep from ** to last st, ch 1, sc 1 in last st. (8 sc + 6 ch-1 sp + 1 ch-2 sp)
Rows 4-32 (74, 100): Rep row 3. (66 (150, 202) sc + 76 (148, 200) ch-1 sp + 1 ch-2 sp)
Do not fasten off.
EDGING
Turn to begin next row. For best results, work a little tighter along the outer edges of the triangle to keep the fabric from flaring/ruffling and a little looser along the top edge to keep the fabric from gathering/bunching and to allow for more stretch to drape across the shoulders or around the neck.
Next rnd: Ch 1, sc 1 in 1st st, ch 1, sc 1 in each ch-1 sp and st to center ch-2 sp, (sc 1, ch 1, sc 1) in ch-2 sp, sc 1 in each st and ch-1 sp to last st, ch 1, sc 1 in last st, rotate work to begin working across top edge, ch 1, sc 1 in the side of each row across top edge, ch 1, sl st to 1st sc of rnd.
Fasten off. Secure and weave in all ends.
FINISHING
Block or wash the work in the same manner used to block the swatch to ensure the finished dimensions match the gauge. I generally prefer to machine dry superwash merino as the fiber was developed for this type of care and it will stretch immensely and be more cumbersome to lay flat to dry. Machine drying allows the fibers to bounce back and will give the fabric better stitch definition and squish. Alternatively, these triangles can be laid flat to dry rather than machine dried as one benefit to superwash merino stretching when wet is that the ends of the triangles can be elongated to form a more shallow shape, which allows for better drape over the shoulders for the scarf and wrap sizes.
Kerchief size only:
Cut a length of yarn to sew snap. Separate the plies and thread one ply onto the sewing needle. Sew the snap to the corners of the kerchief so that the ends overlap to conceal it.
